Wedding Wednesday: Episode 1

by | Jan 8, 2020 | Blog, Wedding Wednesday

Did you know that today is National Bubble Bath Day? Well, now you do. And speaking of fresh, I’ve got a brand new series called Wedding Wednesday where I break down some behind the scenes events that you don’t see, my favorite vendors, and some tips on what to do on your wedding day from a videographers perspective. Welcome to Wedding Wednesday!

So today I want to share with you some of my favorite moments and some mistakes I made during the last wedding video I filmed. If you haven’t seen it, you can click here or in the details below to see more. But here’s my favorite clip from this wedding.

This wedding was beautiful! Part of the beauty of the wedding was the location. The Bride and her family had recently purchased this property. And they spent all summer getting it ready for their October wedding.

One of the first things you’ll notice when you watch this video is that we started filming the day before the wedding. The Bride wanted us to come the day before and film all of the fun activities the day before the wedding. One of my favorite shots of 2019 is this shot of the kayakers and I slowly go back and up and capture this beautiful October day.

Another thing you’ll notice is that the flower girl didn’t make an entrance in the highlight reel. Everything was going smoothly and then the flower girl came out and she did not want any part of it. So, she took the basket and flung it to the side and unfortunately did not make it down the aisle. As much as I would have loved to put it in the video, it just didn’t fit.

Two of my favorite moments during the day had nothing to do with the reception or the ceremony. The first is when we were shooting some pictures with the girls and they decided to bring out this huge bottle of Champagne. When Katrina opened it, you can hear in the video that I may or may not have egged her on to chug it. What happened next was nothing short of hysterical. Man am I glad that I was filming in 120 fps, for those of you who don’t know what that means, it’s super slow mo!

My second favorite moment was during the portrait sessions after the ceremony. Of course, the wedding party is super hungry, so the bride and groom got fries and started eating them while everyone else was taking pictures. I loved this moment because it was just a very real moment and you can see the bride realize what’s happening and she just ran with it.

As a videographer, I love these moments. I’m very big on authenticity and I do everything in my power to make a moment as real as possible. Of course, during the one-on-one session, we’re always trying to create a scene that showcases their love for one another and we always try to make that love real. But when you can cultivate an atmosphere that expects genuine emotion and love, you’re going to see that reflected in the videos. I mean seriously, Katrina’s face is of pure joy when she’s eating those fries. Brides and grooms, it’s your wedding day. You do what you want. If that means eating fries during your portrait sessions, then eat fries and be happy while doing that. Just enjoy your day and don’t let all the stress get to you.

So my mistakes. There were two very special moments that occurred and both were with the bride’s parents. As you can see from this moment with the bride, she’s showing her mom the veil. But what you don’t know is that it was actually her mom’s veil and she was able to sneak it away and surprise her mom. The mother had no idea and it was a beautiful ode to her. But in the hustle and bustle of the day, I was never able to get the bride explaining the importance of the veil and so this moment, while beautiful to Katrina, her mom, the photographer, and I, it means much little to everyone else watching. Having that explanation from Katrina would have made that moment so much more beautiful and I’m kicking myself for not getting that on camera.

The second mistake was the Jack Daniel’s bottle. So Katrina’s dad bought that bottle when she was born and he kept it hidden away until her wedding day. The bottle was 98 years old. Once again, I was never able to sneak the dad away to have him explain on camera what the bottle was about. So to all of us there, we understand the significance, but to those who weren’t there, the drinking of Jack Daniel’s loses significance.
